It's interesting when you get a reminder about the little things you take for granted.... I had no power this afternoon. At first I thought one of the fuses had tripped again. (We have one that trips really easily when you have too many things on at once) Then I thought maybe the powerboard under my desk had tripped. Both were ok, then I realised everything in the house was off.
I had been in the middle of something on the laptop, which was still running on battery power, but everything else associated with it was off... external monitor, external drives, and.... the internet!
So surely I can come up with things to do without power.... this is when you realise how much you take for granted. How about some sewing? No.... the sewing machine needs power. Watch a movie? No... tv and dvd player, or playstation all need power. Washing? Nup, washing machine needs power. I have some gardening to do... why don't I check what days will be best this week? No... no power = no internet = no BOM! How about I go see if we've got mail? I'm on a winner there. :)
Out to the letter box I go... and an ambulance, then a firetruck fly past, lights and sirens going. Down the road is a car on the wrong side of the road up against a pole. At least I now know why I don't have power!
I ended up going with gardening. Though it still didn't occur to me until later that without power there would be no whipper snipping! But by the time I got to that the power was back on, so it all worked out.
So there you go, another insight into another mundane day.... |

| More monkeys! |
[Jul. 1st, 2010|07:01 pm] |
So last Christmas I made a sock monkey for my oldest nephew. My sister picked out a couple of pairs of socks for more monkeys while I was there.
I made the blank monkeys, had no idea what to make them as, then uni started and they sat mocking me from a shelf until recently.
They've finally been finished and were presented to my sister for her birthday.

| | nauseated | ] | The dregs of yesterday mornings cup of tea got tossed when I spotted what looked like part of a bug in the bottom of the cup. Didn't take a good look at it - just tossed it straight away. Figured I hadn't been paying attention when I made it and it was just one of those things so thought no more on it.
This morning I paid a little more attention - checked the cup and the tea bag - but wasn't really particular about it. Cos it wouldn't happen again...... As I get towards the end of my cup of tea I notice a similar bug bit that I saw yesterday. I look closer and there's a head and feelers! So that was the end of this morning cup of tea as well.
I went through the rest of the box of tea - all clear. Not knowing where else they could've come from I empty the kettle into a colander in the sink. A whole cockroach comes out!
The kettle, colander and cockroach are still sitting on the sink. I'll deal with them later. That the cockraches all had the crap boiled out of them doesn't really make up for the ew! factor.... not knowing that there was 2-3 of them in there for who knows how long! And why did I get them all in my tea?! |

| Sock Monkey! |
[Feb. 24th, 2010|02:48 pm] |
Last one today.. I promise! (As if anyone reads these anyway! ;p )
So just before Christmas I decided that what my nephew Callum really needed for Christmas was a pirate sock monkey. I'd seen some at a market a couple of weeks before and thought they were cool. After contacting the seller and finding out that she didn't have any left, but she could make one up for me and I could drive over the other side of town to pick it up..... I decided it would be easier to make one myself....
Ok, it wasn't that hard, but deciding this a few days before Christmas was probably not the brightest idea. But I think he came up really well and I was happier with my version than the market ones. As a result a couple more were requested by Callum's mum. They'll be appearing soon!

| Chocolate & Pear Tart |
[Feb. 24th, 2010|02:11 pm] |
Ok, this is no where as exotic and the tagine and paella, but I hadn't done anything like this before and it's memorable due to the chocolate.
I had all the ingredients I needed for it, except for the cooking chocolate. I did have a block of speciality chocolate though - shiraz and raison - and I couldn't be bothered going down the street just for chocolate!
So if I hadn't have been lazy and gone down the street I think I just would have ended up with a chocolate and pear tart... nice, but nothing special. The wine chocolate though added a whole other element to it. And I'm not a big chocolate eater, so that's saying something I think!

| Paella |
[Feb. 24th, 2010|02:00 pm] |
For Christmas we were given a paella pan by pr0zak. (Thank you!) We've given it a run a couple of times now. These are pics of the first attempt. Was ok, but there was plenty of room for improvement. The crust on the bottom of this one was a little too crusty.. ie, burnt. And the burnt taste permeated a little too much through the whole dish.
Wherever I live next really needs to have a gas stove.

| Chicken Tagine |
[Feb. 24th, 2010|01:52 pm] |
Been meaning to post these for awhile.... so now you're all going to get a bunch of catch up foodie and crafty posts as I go through some photos.
Last year I managed to pick up a tagine off Freecycle. I've always wanted one, but couldn't justify the expense, but what could be better than free! I was expecting a little one, but when I picked it up it was a big, beautiful hand made one. Don't know why you would give something like that away!
Searched out a chicken tagine recipe full of things like carrot, onion, capsicum, potato, lemon, olives and various spices to give it a go. It just wasn't going to work on an electric stove top, so used the wok burner on the BBQ which worked a treat.
Before and after pics... though they sorta look quite the same. :)

| Last chance pussy cat |
[Dec. 11th, 2009|12:07 pm] |

So... anyone want a free cat at all? Yes... it's THAT cat. Yes, he's still here. Yes, I'm too soft. Yes, I've been taken advantage off for way too long.
He's spent all winter outside and he deserves better. I've tried again to contact his previous owner with no success. So come next week I will take him to a shelter. Unless someone takes him I don't think I've got much choice. |
